Like many people have already said: don't push yourself. Know when it
is time to pull over and take a nap.

That said, my trick to stay more alert is to do something interactive.
Just listening to the radio is too passive, but for instance listening and
participating in an interactive cassette language course keeps me wide awake.

Thinking of exciting math, physics and VW brain teasers also works.
(Great also when waiting in lines or stuck in boring meetings)
