A community carried by conversation

The Gerry mailing-list story

The Gerry archive is the record of a community: owners and enthusiasts trading repair notes, parts knowledge, trip reports, questions, and the occasional hard-won answer. Much of Vanagon.com’s living history was written by its members in email and discussion, not in changing website designs.

For decades, the mailing list made practical knowledge searchable and shareable. The old pages were a doorway into those conversations; the people, messages, and generous habit of helping one another were the heart of it.

A difficult interruption

The Vanagon.com homepage was defaced at one point, interrupting access to a community resource. We are preserving what can be recovered while keeping historical evidence distinct from current, trusted pages. The date and scope of the compromise are not asserted here without verified source records.

Van life, then and now

The culture is practical and personal: keep an old van moving, learn from the person who has already solved the problem, share the route, and pass the useful details along. This archive exists to make those contributions easier to find and to give the next conversation somewhere to begin.

Recovery is ongoing. The archive remains a historical record; new community discussion belongs in the forum. Browse the mailing-list archive or continue the conversation in the community forum.
