My '87 Westy has had this symptom, alternator light staying on at
start-up until gas pedal is pressed a little, since I've owned it, 5 years !
New Alternator was installed by previous owner not long before I bought it so
there ya go.  Doesn't seem to cause any other problems.  Always have had
fully charged battery.
