I recently took my thermostat housing to a machine shop to have some sheared bolts extracted. I also took the thermostat out prior to this to prevent damage to the thermostat. There is no gasket or sealer around the piece that you remove to get to the thermostat. The machinist told me I should put a gasket or sealant around this. It doesn't appear to have ever had any kind of gasket. Should I leave it as is, which I'm leaning towards, or should I use gasket sealer? Thanks for any advice.
