Our nearby ARCO AM/PM just raised the price of unleaded regular to 139.9. It seems like a lot to pay, considering that for most of my adult life, gas has been cheaper. When one reflects on just how useful this non-renewable resource is (turn the key, drive away) the price is actually pretty accessable. And when we address the importance petroleum products represent to present day civilization....whoa! Very precious indeed. In America, putting a very high (50%) tax on gasoline to encourage conservation would be an extremely tough sell. (who would vote for it? who could survive an election after proposing it?) Answer: nobody Fantasy: Imagine driving a hydrogen powered Vanagon. High efficiency solar panels on the roof power a converter to draw the fuel out of water!
