VW changed the filler pipe around 88 by adding a ball valve at the end going
into the tank. That thing eliminates fuel spilling out when filling up fast
until nozzle switch off. Replacing is easy - no tank removal required - but
the pipe is not too cheap (around 100 German Marks, i.e. bout 100 $ at the
US dealers).
