The paint code is located on the sheet metal right next to the fuse panel to
the left of the steering column.  It's printed on an adhesive label, at
least that's how it is on my 87.  You could also go to a auto paint store,
get a sheet of VW colors and compare to your paint, most of em have holes
punched out of the middle of the color sample so you can just hold it over
the paint on the car.
