Subject:Re: Axle assembly vs Local Shop Rebuild

In Canada, Canadian Tire offers the same product, part only with exchange, for $150.

To me, this is the way to go, as it's soooo much faster, and then you have 2 new cv's.

I'd say, that if you have jackstands and a jack , buy a 12 point tool for the cv bolts - you can easily do this yourself and save whatever the mech charges..

My first project with my new-to-me 84 Westy, was replacing a rear boot - and although messy, with the lists help - it was easy.

YMMV.

I have just run into a mechanic who says that buying a rebuilt axle assembly.....including new CV's, boots and grease.....is cheaper that buying the CV's and having the local mechanic do it. I was quoted $134 R&R exchange going the axle assembly way.
My 88GL has developed the dread knock, knock, knock in the rear end somewhere. Has to be the C/V. Just wondering the lists' opinion on the subject.
