-I had a minor melt down in my rear hatch auto door lock today - everything is
-okay except that the worm on the motor shaft broke (something jammed,
-overheated, whatever).

Electric-Life sells central locking kits for Vanagons (they advertise in VW
Trends). I have bought a kit, but it'll be a while before I get around to
installing it. It is available with or without remote. Don't know whether
they will sell locks for individual doors, but even so the whole kit may
cost less than a factory VW tailgate lock!
