Here in Seattle we have a site run by the city that accepts household hazardous waste, including antifreeze. Check with your local government, most do now. However, it is impossible to do this job yourself without some loss of antifreeze, but the problem with mechanics is they either dump it in the sewer themselves or have an expensive self-contained unit that hooks up to your cooling system and flushes and fills in one process. You would be hard pressed to find anyone using one of these machines with Dexcool, they wouldn't be able to pay for the machine putting in a five year coolant! You could call around though. Your only other choice would be a VW dealer or German car specialist who fills his with Autobahn coolant. For the DIYer, it is best to park the vehicle on unpaved ground that will absorb the lost coolant and keep it from getting into storm drains. It is only toxic to humans and animals if it is consumed in fairly large quantities, so soak down the area and don't leave any puddles when you are done. It is not harmful to plants, and will be broken down by natural processes in the soil, but stay away from areas near wells or storm sewers to avoid contaminating them. -- Stuart MacMillan Manager, Case Program 800-909-8244 ext. 8208 Fax: 206-269-6360 Getting your share of the Net yet? http://cobaltgroup.com http://UsedEquipNet.com
