Not surprisingly, the guy at the VW dealership did not know this.  Came out,
looked, agreed that the little "metal thingies" were gone.  Oh well, I did
get the replacement light for my speedometer yesterday from him for $1.59,
and he opened up the parts counter five minutes after closing to get it for
me.
