Actually, I've seen them mounted to the driver's side of older vans, you
could do that.  Are you trying to carry two spares or are you just going
to use the spare tire storage under the front for something else?  There
is a fair amount of room there.

A swing out carrier with gas can storage would be elegant though, if
expensive. Nissan makes one of these too. But I get the impression you
are going to spend beau coup bucks getting ready for this trip!
