I haven't heard of any concerns about painting lately, but if people are still wondering I just got "alice", 86'Gl painted this week. She was common sky blue, and now she is bright tangerine. I got this done at Maaco in seattle for $530.00 $80.00 was for the door jambs, which look like five minutes of uncontrolled overspray. Overall the job is better than I could have done but definetly a Maaco job. Alot of overspray, even on the dash. Not to mention my orange radiator. Previous seam cracks are still cracked, and all chips were just painted over. I did take off every non-metal part before giving it over, and that helped alot, as I am sure their would be paint all over the grills as their was on the windshield gasket. The panels that I sanded myself look great, but anything that I left expecting them to sand, was untouched. So if you are thinking about gettign your vanagon painted at a cheap shop. I would suggest these things: 1. remove all plastic pieces. 2. prep sand EVERYTHING to the best of your ability. 3. possibly even do some of the masking yourself, ( as the lady told me they do 8 cars a day, hence they don't spend much time doing any of these tasks). 4. talk about all of your concerns with the manager, you are still paying $500.00 Hope this is helpful.
