My '84 has a cable and spring assist mechanism in the support rods.  It
helps some, but not a whole lot, and I don't know how you would fix it
if it broke.

One of these days I am going to install a pair of gas struts like the
Eurovan campers have.  I did this with the "dead weight" trunk lid on my
MGB and it worked great, preventing many bruised arms and lost fingers.
I just need to find a pair with the right length, strength, and
attachments out of the thousands that are available!
