Steve,
I had a similar overheat problem on my 91 Syncro 3 years ago - I was even
past the upper limit.  45,0000 miles later, not a single cooling problem.
(oh yah, I did replace the hose to the expansion tank last year but know
this was unrelated to my near disaster.)  Sounds like you stopped in time
and had a good trip to boot.  Good job and good luck.
