Rick, Once or twice in the last 13 years I had my sliding door handle go kaput. Each time I was able to fix it by re-tensioning the interior cable that runs from the handle area back to the rear latch. Either yours has lost sufficient tension or perhaps become dislodged or broken in two. I don't know what happened, all of a sudden I can't get the sliding door open on my 80 vanagon. The handle doesn't catch anything, just goes all the way down and that's that. Interior handle doesn't catch either. I pulled off the interior panel and fiddled around to no avail. Is this a common thing, and if so is there a obvious fix? Maybe 20 years of slamming the sliding door takes its toll.
