I just went out and slid under my '81 Cal-model to refresh my memory.  I've
taken off the driver's side valve cover several times "in situ" and don't
remember any particular problems.  Looking at it, I can't see any
difficulty; remove the bail and take the cover out over the heater box and
catalytic converter.

What problems are you encountering?
