The 86-91 VW Vanagon is featured in Automobile Magazine's "Depreciation Corner" article in the August 2000 issue. Page 20 for the eager. A good, although brief article, which describes the Vanagon as a sufficiently luxurious precursor to the mini-van and the SUV when in synchro form. The article mentions the head gasket weakness... in summary the Synchro Westy is described as "providing nearly all the luxuries of a motorhome, with go-nearly-anywhere capabilities, all in an environmentally sensible size at a reasonable price. They state the current value range for the 86-91 Vanagon (base to Synchro-westy) at $5000.-$22000.
