Running hot? that is a bit subjective. A tick above the LED on the gauge
is about normal. Anything much higher can be casued by a LOT of things.

Air in the system
Faulty fan switch
Thermostat problems
Radiator problems
Water pump problems
etc.

I have driven my Syncro Westy in gridlocked traffic in tthe Central Valley
of California in mid-July (~100 degrees F) with the AC on full blast, and
never got much more than a needle's width higher than the LED. It seems
like Vanagon cooling systems are pretty robust. (Of course the radiator fan
runs continuously in these conditions!)
