The other day, when my buddy who's a commercial AC guy is helping me search for an AC leak, he comments on the strange growl coming from the engine. I hadn't heard it until that day either. But lately, I had been smelling coolant and figuring, oh boy, head gasket job coming up. But then last night, when I smelled it, I looked under to see if I could see the leak. Well it's dripping a good bit from the water pump. AC's going to wait. Checked the Bentley in preparation, I can't find anything about the R&R procedure for a water pump, just a picture of it in an exploded diagram of the cooling system. Now I remember when I did the exhaust on my 89, that it's pretty tight in there. So I checked the archives. Best I came up with was talk of it being a 4 hour job. Good, that tells me that the engine can stay in. But though I can see which bolts must be undone, I wonder if there's any order parts should be removed to make the job easier. Or parts that need to come off for those other parts to come off ? Also, I wonder if the intermittent growl could mean that it's grinding on the block. I remember some posts about the water pump eating into the block and having to fix it with JB Weld. If the gauges are small, does it still need JB Weld ?
