Regards to the auto tranny: I have a friend runs a shop which handles repairs
on at least 5-6 Vanagons per day (plus tons of miscelleous other VWs). He
claims to rarely ever see an auto trans Vanagon having transmission problems.

He laughs when I mention Syncro and transmission in the same sentence. But
that's another story.
