Last Sunday evening I returned to Northern California from a Society of Transporter Owners bus show in Long Beach. I drove down on Saturday, and the show was Sunday at Long Beach Veterans Stadium. Decent turnout of people and fun to look at our Vanagons' ancestors. Hot all the way there and all the way back; I ran air conditioner the entire time with the exception of the awful LA freeway gridlock and up over the notorious Grapevine grades. Got 20mpg consistenly with every fill up. My van nicely waited for its battery to die until the morning after I got back, hence my aforementioned radio lockup problem. The previous weekend I went to Reno; 19mpg on the way up (literally) to Reno; 20mpg on the way back down. Maybe next year they'll have a SOTO meet in the Northwest; I'm getting tired of LA traffic.
