John, looks like the STEBRO/Vanagon Stainless Steel Muffler will not fit
on an '84 Vanagon.  While at the VW show in Embrun yesterday I had the
opportunity to personally inspect a '84 and now see what your talking about.
The Bentley manual as David pointed out is wrong.  There is no way to hang
the STEBRO muffler in its current configuration.  You will have to send back
your muffler and we will credit your Visa account.  We will be looking into a
way to modify the STEBRO/Vanagon muffler so that it can be mounted in the '84
Vanagon with the 1.9 water-cooled boxer engine.  Sorry for the mix up, we had
no idea until now.  We learn something new everyday.  Changes to the <A

Mufflers</A>, webpage will be made later today to reflect this situation.
