Yes, it sounds to me that your power steering reservoir is dry.
Why?
Is there a hose leaking?
Are the rack seals leaking?
Is the pump leaking?
you've got to determine where the fluid's going prior to making any
decisions on a trip.
I would say, if it's the rack seals, throw a pint of "Miracle" stop leak
in it, top it off with ATF, and go.
If it's the other two things, better get them fixed prior to venturing
out too far.
