Yes,  it only does it when I'm in reverse.  I can role backwards all day and it does not happen but if I have the van in reverse it happens when I press the clutch in and I come to a stop like I hit a wall.

  Sounds like you have a brake hanging up.  Does this only happen in reverse?

    I'm having a strange problem with my '83 vanagon.  When I'm backing up and I press the clutch in the van come to a halt instead of continuing to role.  Is this a sign that my transmission is getting ready to go or is this just something that is an easy fix.  Thanks for any help.
