regarding the archives: forget about accessing them through the web (my
browser always timesout do to the slow response).
use the list server by sending your query via email:

to: LISTSERV@GERRY.VANAGON.COM
<no subject>
content: search vanagon <search keywords>

follow the instructions in the responses you get.
Works GREAT for me...
