Forget other transmissions, the stock trans will be fine. Instead , you can replace the bellhousing with one from a diesel Vanagon, or get an adaptor plate and flywheel kit from Kennedy Engineering. Then the Jetta engine will bolt right in. Of course with the diesel's bell you will also need a few other parts like the oilpan, pump pickup tube, mounts, etc. Karl Mullendore Westy Ventures 1987 Syncro Westfalia 1.9TD ----- Original Message ----- ok im looking at a conversion to a 1.8l jetta engine. What other transaxles of VW or AUDI would fit up in the allowed space. Also if it was a front wheel drive. could i have the gears revearsed. IE porsche 914 transaxle 5 speed would it fit? But also bolt up to the engine. I want to switch to an automatic or a 5 speed for sure just need recomendations thanks scott
