The last time I did this I didn't have to remove an exhaust pipe.  Just undo
both bolts on the bottom of the thermostat housing and work the bottom of the
thermostat cover out.  It will come out but it is a tight fit.  I think I
remember removing the oil filter to get this to work.  Have fun.
