My first Vanagon listserve post!

My wife and I recently bought an orangeish 1983 water cooled Westy, our
first. (After a week of ownership, a strange force took over. We applied to
the Peace Corps, resigned our jobs and are taking off next month for a
six-month journey through the US before being placed overseas ... I can only
assume this is all due to the bus.)

It didn't come with a second battery, so we purchased an Interstate
Marine/RV Deep Cycle 550 something or other.

We quickly discovered it's too big to fit in the compartment behind the
driver's seat. Read the Sawzall solution on Vanagon.com. Wondered if someone
has another solution. Can the seat be removed? Or should we return the
battery and try to find a wheelchair battery or the like?

I'm sure this question has been asked a zillion times in this group, so
please forgive its reappearance -- the archive search is too long for my
unstable connection.
