Whenever I plan to >check the oil when refueling, I pull the dipstick before I start pumping >fuel. If you're as absentminded a dipstick as I am, this is a wonderful opportunity to lose the engine dipstick! Fill the tank, pop the cap back on and drive away, leaving the dipstick somewhere on the forecourt or road...
