I agree with you in principle, but as I use to work for a large electronics
manufacturing  firm, I can tell you flat out that the pollution that is
created in the fabrication of one 80watt PV cell is equal to running a poorly
tuned VW for about one week. Sad but true. Nobody ever sees the damage that
is done to the environment while creating an end product is good for the
same...
