Subject:Odd Buck

Volks -

Had an odd occurence of bucking today in my '87 Westy. I had a real problem
with that driving from Atlanta to Idaho last year, had the wiring harness
installed, cleaned the AFM with electronic cleaner, and haven't had any real
problems since.

Today we were headed out to the range on a back road, and 5-6 times during
the 15 minute drive, while at part throttle, the beast gave one fairly
serious buck. I had my digitool connected, and didn't notice any odd
behavior of the AFM signal. The van had been driven 10 miles on the highway
with no problems shortly before this.

This generally happened at about 4000 RPM in 3rd gear. I noticed the tach
needle jump up from 4000 to 4100 at least once, but I must admit that when
the van gave a big buck while driving on a narrow, twisty, road, I was more
concerned with staying out of the ditches than reading the gauges!

We stayed at the range for about 90 minutes, and drove back to town. Only
one buck, while going up a moderate grade in third, again at 4000 RPM. and I
noticed the tach needle flick.

The weather was cool, about 10-15 F above freezing. It had rained and
snowed yesterday, but was clear today.

My gas mileage has been 17.5-19 on the highway. I have about 172,000 miles
on the vehicle. Fuel filter is about a year old, cap and roter are about
three months old.

Drove ~180 miles on the highway a week ago with no problems, filled up with
gas at Chevron, and still have > 3/4 tank of gas.

Loose wire? Bad gas? Anything else I should check?
