Subject:Re: tranny from 81 aircooled @ 86 watercooled ?

Yes, it fits. They both share the same bell housing and clutch parts.
The rear section of the linkage is different and must be changed. There
is a fairly well known company selling a kit for this purpose as the air
cooled trannys are cheaper and easier to find, as well as cheaper to
rebuild. The company is Transform of Long Beach, Calif. Check the
advertisers index in any issue of Hot VW. A friend of mine has been
using an 81 air cooled tranny with the Transform kit for many years in
his 89 Vanagon.
