Go to a mechanic with a one of those guns that can read radiant heat. They were developed first for NASA and the space program, then they found their way to the racing circuits, and later into the vehicle maintenance market. A reasonable mechanic will work with you and you can watch the various parts of the engine and cooling system as they heat up. It's interesting to watch the heating that takes place before the thermostat opens, then watch the change when the thermostat opens and the continuing change when the 'stat really opens up. You can also get an idea as to whether your ' stat is working as it should. Good Luck.
