I would second George's comments, you have the list for support.

Myself I have replaced three Scirocco/GTI engines, and did most all the
work on my Ghia's flat four. Everybody starts out not knowing anything.

Get a Bentley manual, a few tools, (some of the less common ones can be
rented when the time comes to lower total cost), and go for it.
