I had a similar experience.  I can ask my mechanic, who I'm going to see
today, what the stuff (a small vial of red liquid) was.

I had the same problem when I picked up my van from the auction.
Distraught, I took it around to the local VW mechanic, who smiled and said
"Ah, lifter noise." He produced a small botle of stuff, can't remember the
name of it, but it claims to reduce built up desposits and quiet noisy
lifters. We poured it into the engine and five minutes later the noise was
gone.
