 They seem to smoothen out the ride.  They really make a difference on
 washboard.

Even with new shocks and springs any vehicle will sag and wallow some under
full load conditions.  How much depends on the load and condition of the
springs and shocks.  Airbags will allow you to correct that.  The effect is
most dramatic on the saggy butt vans (like mine) but will show up on any
loaded vehicle.
