Thanks for all responses to my question, unfortunately as it turns out the 'hole' is where something called a head stud used to be.  The terminal forces of electrolysis caused it to snap off and let the coolant flow freely.  I am now somewhat decided on going ahead with the fast forward 2.0 conversion kit, as I've had enough of walking on 'pins and needles' around the wasserleaker! (My third).  Would appreciate any advice or experience with Fast Forward, from their website they seem pretty upstanding.
