Looking for some list expertise.  

I read a lot about the use of aftermarket heads being used when rebuilding our engines.  Why?  Can't the original heads be reused to save money?  What is gained by going with new heads?  If new heads are THE answer, what brands are recommended and why?

I would appreciate your expert responses.
