Subject:Engine RPMs???

I am zeroing in on my next VW and have been thinking about my driving
habits...

I have read and re-read the thread a while back about "How fast should a
1.9 go?" and am wondering about this stuff. I have owned 2 breadloafs with
1800-2000 engines in them. Neither had a tach, but I never really felt good
about going faster than say, 65mph.
I parted ways with VW a few years ago and have been driving a Toyota 4X4
which is doing 70mph at 3200RPM, and thats about where I like to keep it,
and in my mind at least, it is out of sympathy for the car.
In the "How fast should a 1.9 go?" thread, folks were talking about
cruising at 3800-4500 RPM.
I personally wouldnt be able to handle that for too long, thinking that I
am abusing the car!!!!

Are Vanagons really O.K. with cruising along at 3800 RPM all the time?

Thanks,

Jason Loewenstein
