I was planning to install the dampner pulley from a 85TD onto my 1.9 converted Vanagon which has the stamped steel pulley when I saw a potential problem. The stamped pulley has 2 belt grooves which are the same size with only the outer one being used going to the water pump. The dampner pulley from the TD has 2 belt grooves also but the outer one is smaller diameter which would cause the water pump to spin faster and thus the alternator to spin faster. One solution would be to run a one-belt system using the inside pulley, partially wrapping the water pump pulley, and adjusting at the alternator. However, I've been told that the one belt system doesn't contact the water pump sufficiently on Vanagons and may cause overheating from belt slippage. Is there a solution to this problem?
