I would not rule out water in the gas tank plugging the fuel filter.  Sounds
a lot like my problem.  I diagnosed this by mounting a fuel pressure gauge
on the system, and having my kids observe the fuel pressure (and using the
timing light) during poor operation.  Good luck.
