Flushing the cooling system and replacing the coolant can't hurt. You might want to consider a new thermostat as well. This is only a band-aid if the heads are leaking. In the search for more power without great expense I've installed a K&N air filter, Bosch Platinium +4 plugs (part #4477), polished the throttle body throat, replaced the exhaust system with stock replacement pipes with the flanges smoothed and the whole system ceramic coated, and capped it off with a low restriction muffler (Dynamax 14427). It's kind of hard to find a hill to test it on in Houston but it moves down the highway pretty smartly. I've got an MSD 6 unit that I haven't had the cajones to install yet but will try soon (got it free from a friend). Recently saw where someone was running their 1.9 with the timing reset to 8 degrees BTDC but I haven't tried that yet either.
