Do CV joints make a sound when they're going bad? I've heard a bad one in my
rabbit when I'd turn, but I have no experience with vanagon CV's.

I'm hearing a thump thump thumping in the back end. It's not timed to the
rotation of the wheels however.  Could this be a CV joint?
