The joke is great, but some of the people listening have been conditioned by
woman to think and act like woman and react accordingly.  Those who are
secure in themselves will laugh freely even if the joke is about them.
One does not have to be self deprecating to laugh at oneself.  We know that
we are not perfect.  And that is the best part in living...
As times change so do people.  Even whole countries.
