I've driven in Italy and can confirm that they definately do not use brakes,
even when the light turns red (at which time they instead make simultaneous
use of the horn and accelerator pedal, while opposing traffic makes
simultaneous use of the horn and certain hand gestures).  Hence Brembo's
reputation for their brake rotors lasting so long...
