As one who has driven across the U.S. both on 40 (maryland to san diego
thru memphis) and on 50 to 80 (UC Berkeley to michigan)  I strongly
recommend the southern route.  It is more picturesque, and a more
leasurely(sedate) drive.  Also, if you have a CB, the truckers in the South
are more likely to help you out than their northern brethren.  If you have
