The Dodge/Plymouth Omni/Horizon used a VW block when it came out in '78. Horrible car, all sorts of classic problems including shaking the alternator off its mounts and other stuff too awful to mention (well...left inner CV joint, new distributor every 50k miles, ECU uncovered and mounted in the induction stream so it got wet and quit working, carburetor froze in winter and the engine would race out of control on starting, carburetor float mounting ears *wore through* from vibration, car preferred to travel back-to-front, all plastic trim including steering wheel shrank 10% in length, statistically worst repair record of any car on the road at the time, at least in sufficient numbers for CU to take notice. Excellent paint, and the first car I'd had that I could drive for eight hours without a cramp in my foot). Anyway... ...wait for it... A lot of the engine problems went away when they switched to a Renault block! (But it was still a horrible car.) david David Beierl - Providence, RI http://pws.prserv.net/synergy/Vanagon/ '84 Westy "Dutiful Passage" '85 GL "Poor Relation"
