I recently sold a nice old '49 Chevy pickup. Great old original driver. A fellow in upstate NY bought it. He said he was going to drive down and tow it back. I said bring cash. My auction said cash. He changed his mind, unable to get time off of work. He sent a transport company for it but now I had no way to get cash. I was worried I might get a bad check and already have shipped the truck. I would be financially unable to pursue the truck and the buyer. Anyhow he sent a cashier's check (I agreed to a cashier's check or postal money order) - no paperwork sent until it cleared, nor trucks picked up until it cleared. Really put this guy out on a limb. First he's buying it sight unseen, and now his money is all out there and he has nothing but my word that everything will be alright. We had great communication and it made all the difference. He sent a cashier's check and my bank said they would have to sit on it for 5 days before they would cash it for me. Seems the branch manager decided that though it is technically impossible to cancel a cashier's check unless it is stolen, she would just be sure. Screwed up the works royally. I did a little strong negotiation with a lady at the main bank and she verified the check and quietly took care of it in 3 days vs. 5. I've cancelled my accounts with them. The truck was picked up and he was happy. How does everyone else handle the money transfer safely and expeditiously?
