Jeff, look in the hole in the end of the crank.  See a thing that looks like
a pilot bearing.  Swear.  Pull it out.  Problem solved.  I have been down
this same road except I noticed the pilot bearing in the end of the crank
before I tried putting the stuff together.  Hope this helps.
